The Shambler

To the tune of The Gambler by Kenny Rogers

As civilization crumbled, on my way out of the wasteland,
I met up with the shambler, captured in the combat zone.
He would try to grab me, but chains held down his hand.
Then soldiers overtook us, and he began to moan.

He said, son, I've made a meal out of eating peoples faces,
and knowing how their brains'll taste by the fear that's in their eyes.
So if you don't mind my saying, I see you're out of ammo cases.
For a taste of your kidneys I'll give you some advice.

So I shed my kevlar armor and my kidney he did swallow.
Then he bit my leg again, like he did last night.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all aggression.
Said, if you're gonna hunt a zombie boy, ya got to learn to hunt 'em right.

You got to know where to shoot 'em, how to execute 'em,
know where to hide away and know when to run.
Don't ignite a zombie before it's been disabled.
There'll be time enough to burn 'em when the shootin's done.

Every zombie knows that the secret to surviving
is knowing where the humans live and finding some to eat.
'Cause every brain's for dinner and every brain's delicious,
and the best that you can hope for is a bullet to the cheek.

And when he'd finished moaning, he loosed a stream of vomit,
broke free of his chains, and took a bite of Pete.
And somewhere in the darkness, a soldier scored a headshot.
But then I started groaning—I found a face that I could eat.

You got to know where to shoot 'em, how to execute 'em,
know where to hide away and know when to run.
Don't ignite a zombie before it's been disabled.
There'll be time enough to burn 'em when the shootin's done.

You got to know where to shoot 'em, how to execute 'em,
know where to hide away and know when to run.
Don't ignite a zombie before it's been disabled.
There'll be time enough to burn 'em when the shootin's done.

The original version, so you can hear how badly I mangled Kenny's hit…
